What Is Permanent Makeup ?

Permanent makeup, also called cosmetic tattooing or permanent cosmetics, is a technique that adds natural-looking color to the skin. It enhances features like the brows, eyes, and lips by carefully implanting pigment into the upper layers of the skin. The result is the look of everyday makeup that won’t smudge or fade. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to save time, avoid makeup allergies, or simply wake up looking fresh and effortless.

Experience natural-looking results with permanent makeup at Dermaluxe Spa in Houston. Each treatment is designed to enhance your features with soft, long-lasting results that never look overdone.

Proper pre-care is essential for the best possible results. Please review the guidelines below based on your specific procedure:

Brows:

  • Do not pluck, wax, or tweeze your eyebrows before your appointment.

  • Avoid using dye, bleach, or any gels that stain the skin in the brow area.

  • Refrain from taking Aspirin, Fish Oil, Niacin, Vitamin E, or Ibuprofen for 48 to 72 hours before your appointment.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine for at least 48 hours prior to your session.

  • If you’re on blood-thinning medication, speak with your doctor—stopping it for at least 5 days may be required.

  • Stay well-hydrated the day before your procedure.

  • Schedule Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin at least two weeks before or after your appointment.

  • Avoid chemical peels or laser treatments for six weeks prior.

  • Discontinue prescription retinoids two weeks in advance.

  • Stay out of the sun and avoid tanning for two weeks before and after the procedure.

Eyeliner:

  • Remove lash extensions or strip lashes at least one week before your appointment.

  • Stop using lash growth serums for at least one month beforehand.

  • Do not wear contact lenses to your appointment. Clean contacts may be worn 72 hours after the procedure.

  • If you usually wear contacts, bring your glasses with you.

  • If you’re prone to nervousness or eye twitching, speak with your doctor about possibly taking a mild calming medication.

  • Purchase new mascara to use after the procedure to prevent any risk of infection.

  • Use lubricating eye drops after your procedure if dry eyes occur—typically for up to 3 days if needed.

Lips:

  • Do not have lip fillers or injections within 6 weeks of your appointment.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water the day before.

  • Bring your favorite lipstick or lip liner for color reference.

  • If you’re prone to cold sores, you must get an antiviral prescription from your doctor. Begin taking it two days before your appointment and bring proof of the prescription with you. No exceptions.

  • Your lips should be well-moisturized and not peeling. If they are excessively dry, contact us to reschedule.

Proper aftercare is essential for beautiful results and long-lasting pigment retention. Please follow these steps for optimal healing:

  • Keep the area clean and dry for the first 7 to 10 days. Avoid any activities that may cause excess moisture, such as sweating or steam.

  • Avoid swimming, hot tubs, saunas, and long showers until the area is fully healed.

  • Stay out of the sun and avoid tanning beds. UV exposure can lead to fading or irritation.

  • Apply only the ointment recommended by your artist. This will help soothe the area and promote proper healing.

  • Do not apply makeup on or near the treated area while it heals. This prevents contamination and infection.

  • Avoid using skincare products, creams, or exfoliants on the area unless specifically instructed.

  • Don’t pick, scratch, or rub the treated skin. Let any flaking or scabbing come off naturally to avoid pigment loss.

  • Sleep on your back if possible to reduce friction or pressure on the area.

  • Be sure to schedule a touch-up session as recommended, usually within 6 to 8 weeks, to perfect the results.

The duration varies depending on the area being treated and the complexity of the design. Typically, a session can last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

Permanent makeup is a wonderful way to enhance your natural beauty, and it’s designed to last for a good while. Typically, it can last anywhere from 1 to 3 years, and often even longer, depending on factors such as your skin type, aftercare routine, and lifestyle habits.

Individuals with oily skin may find that the pigments fade faster. Similarly, those who engage in activities that cause excessive sweating, such as hot yoga, swimming, or sun exposure, may also notice quicker fading. On the other hand, individuals with normal to dry skin may find that the pigments last longer. Additionally, people who take good care of their skin by avoiding exfoliants and acids around the brow area that may cause fading, may also find that the results last longer.

Yes, touch-ups are often necessary for permanent makeup. The initial application may not achieve the desired color intensity, so a touch-up helps fine-tune the pigment. Some areas may fade more quickly than others, and a touch-up ensures even color distribution. Adjustments may also be needed to perfect the shape and symmetry.

Additionally, touch-ups help maintain the appearance over time, as all permanent makeup gradually fades. We recommend a touch-up within 6-8 weeks after the initial procedure, with maintenance touch-ups every 1-2 years depending on the individual’s skin type and lifestyle. We suggest waiting as long as possible between appointments to maintain the integrity and health of the skin.

In many cases, we can help improve or correct previous permanent makeup—but not always. Whether correction is possible depends on several factors:

  • Number of past sessions

  • Placement issues (such as poor shape, pigment outside the lip line, or eyeliner blowout)

  • Color of the ink (unnatural tones like blue, green, or purple are harder to correct)

  • Saturation levels (overly dark or dense pigment can limit options)

Not all clients are good candidates for correction. In some situations, removal may be necessary first, especially if there is significant scar tissue, residual pigment, or uneven skin tone like hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.

Every case is different, so a thorough consultation is required before proceeding.

Permanent makeup is generally safe, but it may not be suitable for everyone. Certain health conditions, medications, or skin sensitivities can impact eligibility. A consultation is required to determine whether this treatment is right for you.

General Contraindications:

  • Severe acne, skin infections, or dermatitis

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medications

  • Uncontrolled diabetes

  • Keloid or hypertrophic scarring

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • Immunocompromised individuals

  • Epilepsy

  • Chemotherapy or radiation therapy

  • Organ transplant recipients

  • Major heart conditions or pacemaker

  • Active herpes simplex (cold sores)

  • Recent sunburn or excessive sun exposure

  • Use of photosensitizing or contraindicated medications

  • Recent cosmetic procedures (chemical peels, laser treatments, injectables – wait 4+ weeks)

Allergies and Patch Testing:
If you have a known allergy to pigments, dyes, or colorants (such as in cosmetics, food, or clothing), we recommend a patch test at least 30 days before your procedure. This is optional for those with tattoos or mild sensitivities, but always available for peace of mind.

Kashia truly exceeded my expectations. I came in for eyebrow/scar camouflage and I’m honestly amazed by the results. My brows look so natural, soft, and beautifully shaped while still looking completely like me. Her attention to detail and artistry are on another level — she has such an incredible eye and made me feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire process. I was initially nervous going in, but I left feeling not only excited about my results, but like I had made a genuine connection. Thank you, Kashia, for the laughs, the great conversations, and for creating such a welcoming experience. You are truly an artist, and I’m so glad I found you. I’m already looking forward to seeing you again soon. Highly recommend to anyone considering this treatment!

Kashia and Carlos are the best! Kashia did my microblading removal and it was such an easy process. She was very informative beforehand and made the process feel like a breeze. Certainly considering having her do a fresh set of powder brows once they heal. Carlos did my facial as I've been struggling with some of my skin issues and my skin has NEVER looked so good!! Will be back for sure! Editing to add: came back for a different service this time - eyebrow wax. I needed them cleaned up, and Carlos heard me out about my insecurity with my bald spot on my brow. He mentioned I have enough hair that if Im up for trying lamination, he could shape them so that my bald spot isnt as noticeable with the hairs I have. GUYS!!!! When I say that he is a magician, I MEAN IT! A bald spot that I've had since I was 5 is somehow filled in with my brow hairs!! I never knew how to shape them and always just filled them in with brow powders and product, but he has changed that. I literally broke down in happy tears!! Thank you!!

I finally had my Powder/Ombre Brows (Microshading) done today at Dermaluxe Spa, and I couldn't be happier! Kashia worked her magic and created the most beautiful brows I could have imagined. I only wish I had found her sooner. From the moment I arrived, she made me feel completely at ease. She was meticulous, professional, and took the time to ensure everything was perfect. To anyone feeling nervous about the procedure, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. I experienced no discomfort and was amazed at how comfortable the entire process was. Kashia is a true professional, and her expertise and attention to detail shine through in her work. Thank you, Kashia, for such a wonderful experience and for giving me the brows I've always wanted. I can't wait for my retouch appointment! Highly recommend! I had such a great experience at Dermaluxe Spa with Kashia. She is incredibly professional, honest, and truly has your best interest at heart. What I appreciated most is that she didn’t just tell me what I wanted to hear, she told me what was right for my skin and situation. I originally went in hoping for nano brows, but Kashia carefully assessed my previous microblading (which had become uneven over the years) and explained that I wasn’t a good candidate just yet. Instead, she recommended laser removal first to give me the best possible result long-term. That level of honesty and expertise really stood out to me. The laser treatment itself was quick and very manageable. I have one more session to go before moving forward with powder brows, and I already feel 100% confident that I’m in the best hands. Kashia’s artistry and attention to detail are evident, and I can’t wait to go back and continue the process. Highly recommend!

Kashia is a pro! I have been trusting her for over a decade for brows and cosmetology, and she consistently delivers great results. She is meticulous and knowledgeable, does a thorough assessment of your skin before recommending procedures. I appreciate that she doesn’t go for a quick fix and her work lasts and looks great.

I came to Kashia in February I believe for my first powder/ombre eyebrows and I’m not gonna lie I was worried. Not about the pain I might feel but worried my eyebrows might come out too perfect almost fake looking. She did a phenomenal job!!! I was elated when she was done and I was able to finally look at them. They didn’t look fake at all and looked perfect but in a natural way. Since menopause my eyebrows have been thinning a lot and of course graying. The gray hairs were easy for me to deal with at home but the bare spots I was tired of filling in with a pencil all the time so I decided to try this and do not regret it for a moment. Today I came back for my touch up and it still looks perfect! I love Keshia! She’s patient, kind and a perfectionist!!!

I was referred to Dermalux Spa by a friend and could not be happier with the results. Kaisha did an amazing job on my eyebrows. I have always wanted to get permanent eyebrows, as mine are very thin, but was afraid. I highly recommend going to Dermalux! My eyebrows look so natural that my friends had no idea I had them done. Now I don't have to draw them on and worry about reapplying throughout the day. Also, I have had 2 facials by Carlos and will be going back regularly. He is amazing! Thank you both for the great services.

Absolutely love it here. Been coming for years!! Kasia is an amazing artist and Carlos’s facials are magical…I’m obsessed with the green peel and the microderm. Also started doing electrolysis there because perimenopause is doing this cutie little thing where I started sprouting chin hairs and it’s such a relief having them zapped and obliterated! Highly recommend!

Kashia is great with permanent makeup removal! I’m so glad she fixed a very bright color done on my lips at a different spa. The results look great! Update: Kasha also removed very dark permanent makeup on my brows that was done at another spa. Once that was complete, she gave me beautiful powder brows that look natural and go great with my skin and hair color. Kasha is the best!
